If you plan to install a new sign or update an existing one in Burlington, you must apply for a sign permit. Sign permits help ensure signs are safe, meet legal requirements, and fit appropriately within their surroundings.
You need a permit for many types of signs, including billboards, ground signs, fascia or wall signs, and portable signs.
The City reviews each application to confirm the sign complies with the Ontario Building Code and the City’s Sign Bylaw (Consolidated By-law 034-2007), which sets rules for sign size, placement, use, and maintenance across Burlington.
There are different permits for different types of signs, sign variances and site alterations. You can submit any of the following permit application forms to us at bylaw@burlington.ca
Apply early. During the spring and summer months, we receive a high volume of requests, which can affect processing times.
How to Apply for a Sign Permit |
|
If you’re installing a new sign or updating an existing one, you’ll need a sign permit. The steps below outline how to apply and what to expect during the review process. Most standard sign permit applications are reviewed within 5 to 7 business days. Sign variances may take up to 3 weeks, and complex installations may require additional review as part of a site plan process. |
Determine your sign type |
|
Start by identifying the type of sign you plan to install, such as a wall or fascia sign, ground or pylon sign, portable sign, banner, or billboard. Choosing the correct sign type helps ensure you apply using the right form and rules. |
Review the rules and requirements |
| Check the Sign Bylaw (Consolidated By-law 034-2007) and confirm your sign meets size, height, and location requirements. This is also a good time to review permit timelines and fees so you know what to expect before applying. |
Prepare your documents |
|
Gather all required materials, which may include drawings, a site plan, photos, or an engineer’s stamp for larger or more complex signs. Submitting complete information helps avoid delays or refusals. |
Submit your application and payment |
|
Apply online or by form for your specific sign type and submit payment at the same time. Please include a site plan sketch or photo, along with the business name and address. Applications should be submitted at least 7 business days before installation, as late applications may not be processed in time. |
Wait for review and approval |
|
City staff will review your application to confirm it meets all requirements. Once approved, you can proceed with installing your sign. If your application does not meet the criteria, it may be declined. |
